Today is Day Twenty-two of “The Respect Dare” and we are going to talk about working as for the Lord.
“Whatever you do, do you work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” ~ Colossians 3:23-24 NASB
I am convinced that most of us wouldn’t have nearly as many struggles as we do today if we understood that we are to be doing all of our work with diligence and as if the Lord was standing there with us. If Jesus was standing there beside you at the kitchen sink, would you really be muttering and complaining about how unfair it is and how selfish everyone else is? Or would you be talking with Him and rejoicing at the ability to serve?
What is your motivation for the work that you do? Are you expecting others to notice and for it to be important to them? Are you expecting to hear about what a great job you did and how much they appreciate it? My husband is an amazing man who regularly tells me how much he appreciates all that I do. But, I can still feel very unappreciated when he doesn’t notice or seems to expect more of me than I expect to give at that moment. I can choose to rejoice and serve him anyway, or be selfish and self-centered and complain.
I choose joy! I choose to bless my husband and children by serving them. This doesn’t mean that I do it all and expect them to walk all over me. It means that I am going to have to clean up anyway, I may as well choose joy and feel better doing it. And, you can bet that I am training my children to do the same.
How about you? Are you serving your family as for the Lord? Are you taking the times that you serve and feel unappreciated to talk it over with the Lord and choose His joy? Start today!
Heavenly Father, thank you for the daily opportunities to serve You by serving my family. I pray that you would help me to really train my children to serve without expectations and to serve with hearts overflowing with joy.
In Jesus’ Name… Amen!
