Today is Day Eleven of “The Respect Dare” and we are reminded by Nina that “Whatever we pay attention to grows!”.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” ~ Philippians 4:8 NIV
My family could tell you that THIS is one of my all time favorite verses! I have long understood that whatever we dwell on in our hearts and minds takes hold and influences the rest of our spirit and vision.
I specifically love the NASB version of this verse…
“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” ~ Philippians 4:8 NASB
“Dwell on these things”… Dwell… defined as to linger over, emphasize, or ponder. This means that we are to do more than just take a moment to think on and then get back to our other distractions. We are to rest on these thoughts and let them fill our minds and take our hearts captive with peace.
Sometimes though, we don’t realize that our vision has been clouded by emotion or hurts. We can’t see the bigger picture because of the smaller hurt that happened and caught our focus in the midst. Jesus wants us to take time to step back from those hurts and see how He has been working all things for His glory and for our good… to weave a larger and more beautiful tapestry.
Today, we are challenged to look back for three big achievements in our lives and prayerfully consider how the Lord was involved in each one of them. This is an introspective exercise meant to help us to honestly evaluate our progress so far with The Respect Dare. I want to challenge each of you to honestly evaluate your progress through the dare so far, based on our above scripture. Seek out the good that God is doing and focus on that. Yes, there will still be areas that we need to work on, but God has this. And I truly believe that He is going to complete what He has started in us. So, look at how much He has already done! We are now 1/4 of the way through the dare!
Heavenly Father, I am so blessed by this study. It is challenging me to see things through your eyes instead of the colored lenses I’ve held onto for years. Thank You for showing me how much I’ve already grown over the years I have walked with You. And thank you even more for giving me a glimpse of what is yet to come and the security of knowledge that I can trust You to lead me down the right paths.
Give each of us strength and joy this weekend. Guard our steps and our tongues that we would go where you send us and speak what you’ve given us.
