Hello readers! Today I am going to begin a 7-part series with my thoughts on what our 25th wedding anniversary means to me. This series will run from today, Monday August 20th, skip the weekend, and wrap up on Tuesday August 28th – the actual date of our anniversary. Please follow along each day with us, and feel free to comment on each or any section of the series. Your feedback is welcome!

25 YEARS MARRIED…

27 years together, 25 years of marriage… And still going STRONG!! Where has time gone? Over these past several weeks I have given MUCH thought to what I might say in this post. And I’m still just as clueless as when I started!

But that wonderful woman I married, yes THAT one… The Most Beautiful Woman In The World… tonight she suggested something that I think is pretty cool! WHAT IF… we had the opportunity to go back in time and give our younger selves five tips for marriage based on the knowledge we have today? How awesome would that be?

How much heartache could the “newly married us” have avoided through the years, armed with this sort of knowledge from the much older us? The thoughts spinning through my mind right now are just mind-blowing with the potential!

I met Tiffani in late 1985, the year that the movie “Back To The Future” was based in. So with that in mind, I’d love to have a little fun with that theme! Let’s take a trip in Doc Emmett Brown’s DeLorean – the one with the 1.21 jigawatt flux capacitor – to do a little time travel. Only this time, we’ll take a bit of artistic liberty to travel BACK to 1985 instead of forward to it from 1955.

Climb aboard…

Set the dashboard date controls to 1985…

Double check the flux capacitor…

From somewhere outside the vehicle, we hear Doc’s voice… “Don’t worry. As long as you hit that wire with the connecting hook at precisely 88 miles an hour, the instant the lightning strikes the tower, everything will be fine.”

BBBBZZZZZZZTTTTTTTT!!!!!!

So here we are in winter 1985, where a very young Jason & Tiffani have just met and are spending a BOATLOAD of time together, getting to know one another. Unfortunately, neither of them has Christ living in their heart, so they begin this time of life in much the same way that so many do.

Time marches on, romance blooms, things happen, and their first child is born in December 1986. Tiffani and Jason move in together in June of 1987, while he is stationed at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina. Their little boy will be 8 months old on the day that Jason & Tiffani actually get married… August 28th, 1987 – which also just happens to be Jason’s 21st birthday. Tiffani challenged Jason to set the date, so he decided to pick a day where it would be most difficult to forget his anniversary. It’s worked for him for 25 anniversaries now, so I chalk that one up to a win-win for the marriage!

Now we find Jason after the “Justice Of The Peace” wedding ceremony… he’s relaxing at home and enjoying some of his favorite schnapps while Tiffani puts the baby to bed. This is the moment we’ve come for… the chance to share the knowledge of decades with a young man who hasn’t even been married a single day yet. So what would I, the much older and (prayerfully) wiser Jason share with my young self?

Come back tomorrow for the continuation of this 7-post series!

  2. Congrats on the upcoming anniversary! I love the Back to the Future reference. I’m hearing Huey Lewis & the News tunes in my head now as I head to Twin Pines–I mean, Lone Pine mall.
